Logo Challenge #005: Preference Crew

Preference Crew, here we go!

Taking a taste from the lessons I learned, there was one idea that instantly came to mind, so I decided to stick with it. When I think preferences, I think fashion. I don't know, that's just how my mind operates. So when I thought about Preference Crew, I thought about a men's fashion design website that helps men figure out a style based on a given set of preferences. Very much like Five Four, for those of you familiar.

That said, I wanted to keep the logo very basic and very clean. Speaking of clean, one of my favorite fonts out there is called Lulo Clean, so that's what I ended up using. I think it has a very clean, sleek look about it, and it just emanates simplicity. Plus, for those of you familiar, there is a haircare line for men known as American Crew. I'll toss a pic down below, but I think they complement each other very well.

Using some influences from designs online, I did build the outline of the shirt from scratch. It's just a set of very simple shapes; some rectangles skewed around and such. When I was going about creating the buttons, I wasn't sure how many buttons to put. Coincidentally, I had an Express catalog within reach, so I consulted that also in the design of the shirt.

After creating the outline of the shirt, I wanted to throw a very simple pattern over it. Simple because that is the essence of the logo, and anything more complex would do this amateur graphic designer in! When thinking about my own wardrobe, I had a particular shirt I own that I thought I could emulate. While not precise, the shirt below is the one I drew inspiration from.

So, the final design originally wasn't going to be the four squares you see above. I started off with the off white color below...

...and after showing it to my lovely wife, Maggie, she wanted to see it in a couple other colors. She suggested a navy color, a pale yellow color, and a stormy gray color. I agreed that it wouldn't be a bad idea, so I went about creating those variants. I already had good color swatches in my existing Illustrator palette for pale yellow and storm gray, but I didn't have a good one for navy. That said, I googled "fashion navy color" and came across this fashion site. Using the magic of the eyedropper, I took the navy from her dress. And it's perfect.

Showing them back to Maggie to get her take on which is her favorite, and we both had about the same reaction: why not use all four? I think this works great on two levels. One, we both like all the colors, and two, it works with the premise of the "business". Each person has their own preference, and Preference Crew is there to meet your needs!

This has been my favorite logo challenge so far. I think it came out really well, and I am very happy with this whole post overall. Of all the challenge weeks I've completed so far, this is definitely the one I would give to a prospective "Preference Crew" if that business was real. Hoping next week's challenge goes equally well!
