Logo Challenge #010: Unanimous Memorial
You probably think I'm joking, right?
Well, no. You see, inasmuch as I'm trying to hone my skills with Adobe Illustrator, I'm also trying to learn the boundaries of design. "Unanimous Memorial" provided me with the opportunity to be mindful of those boundaries.
If I were to provide a description for what this organization does, it's a place that builds all kinds of memorials. Grave stones, plaques, and more. The thing with memorials is that they are all about memory and respect. They are generally quiet places where people go to reflect on the past. They generally aren't flashy and serve as hallowed grounds.
So, if I were a designer building a true-to-life logo for Unanimous Memorial, it would be something as simplistic as this.
Obviously, the actual execution of this logo took me next to no time at all. The font used is called Ziamimi. I happened to come across it one time over at the design blog Creative Bloq and thought it would be appropriate to use here. Instead of using a pure white background, I decided to go with a very light gray background. It seemed to me to be reflective of the stone typically used in memorial monuments.
You might be asking, "What's with the gray square in the corner of the black box?" There's definitely a purpose to it, and I'll let you be the judge on if its clever or not. Because the design is so simple, this little square probably drew your eye immediately, right? Well, if you're going to Unanimous Memorial, you probably going through a difficult thing in life. When you're staring at a business card with this logo on it, the last thing you want to do is dwell on the fact that you have to visit Unanimous Memorial.
This little square, then, purposefully draws your eye away from this fact and encourages the creative freedom for you to figure out what this little square is supposed to mean. And for that second, minute, or hour you spend trying to figure out what this square is supposed to represent, that's a second, minute or hour you're not thinking about the reason you're there.
Anyway, I thought it was a good idea, but I'll let you judge that for yourself. That wraps up this post. Since this one was pretty quick, I'll look to do another more quickly.
